Abstract: How much of Strinderg "the possessed" is there in his works? How much of his private life must a literary critic know before he can analyze them? Some critics have tried to read Strindberg's biography from his writings. Others have ignored his life altogheter. Otto Reinert, the editor of this volume, suggest that critics best come to terms with Strindberg's life by treating the work as imaginative equivalent of his life-as neither fact nor paranoia but as private experience transcended through art and made into images of the modern consciousness.
