Abstract: This revised Norton Critical Edition of "Portrait of a Lady" is based on the New York edition (1908), extensively revised by Henry James himself. Autobiographical excerpts from Henry James's other writings - his "Notebooks", the works "A Small Boy and Others" and "Notes of a Son and Brother", and his Italian travel books - give the reader an insight into James's life. Also included are four contemporary reviews of the novel and seven critical essays providing varied critical responses.
