Abstract: This is a richly illustrated account of contacts between African blacks and Mediterranean whites from the Egyptian pharaohs to the Christian writers of the sixth century. Frank Snowden demonstrates that in the ancient world the white society did not discriminate against blacks because of their color, and he examines the factors that contributed to the absence of virulent color prejudice.
